Working in Nurseries is a highly desirable and rewarding profession where you will have the opportunity to offer support and care to children up to 5 years of age. As a Nursery specialist you will be responsible for the social, emotional, educational and practical development of children in you care as well as nurturing and guiding them through many key milestones.

What Qualifications Do I Need To Work In A Nursery?

Nursery Assistant

If you aspire to be a Nursery Assistant, a childcare qualification is not essential as you will be working under the supervision of a qualified Nursery Nurse. What Employers will look for is previous experience of supporting Early Years children with a proven track record of success. Nursery Assistants will also be expected to have strong Literacy and Numeracy skills and employers will sometimes look for a GCSE C grade or equivalent in Maths and English.

Nursery Nurse

If you wish to work as a Nursery Nurse, you will need the a full and relevant childcare or education qualification such as;

  • CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Child Care and Education
  • BTEC National Diploma in Children's Care, Learning and Development
  • NVQ Level 3 in Children's Care, Learning and Development

Early Years Practitioner

To work as an Early Years practitioner candidates can obtain a Level 3 qualification such as the CACHE Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Workforce (Early Years Educator) course or they can undertake an FdA or BA (Honours) degree for example, Early Childhood Studies, Early Years Practice and Early Years Education.

Early Years Teacher

To find employment as an Early Years teacher, you will need to have Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS) by completing an Early Years initial teacher training (EYITT) course. Routes on how to achieve this are available from the National Careers Service. In addition to this, teachers must pass the professional skills tests in numeracy and literacy.

Montessori Teacher

We work with a number of Nursery establishments including Montessori's. If you are looking for work opportunities as a Montessori Teacher you will need to have completed a Montessori diploma that includes a placement. Some organisations may require higher education certificates such as A Levels.

Nursery Job Responsibilities

Depending on the seniority of the role, responsibilities do vary but all Nursery staff will be expected to undertake the following.

  • Supervising students during break and lunchtime.
  • Creating and delivering stimulating activities involving either craft, music, literacy, numeracy or a combination.
  • To keep a proper record of achievement file on key children, for parents/carers.
  • Working closely with other nursery staff members.
  • Ensuring rooms and areas are clean and hygienic.
  • Washing and changing children as required.
  • Liaise with and support parents/carers and other family members.
